For the past couple weeks at my lfs this guy keeps catching my eye. I was wondering if anyone could ID this catfish, my lfs says its a rare synodontis and has it priced at $60 it is also about 6-7 inches long. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

james99 james99 I think you are right with the eupterus hybrid. I just looked up hybrids and it seems to be a cross between eupterus and angelicus. would you consider $60 a fare price for one that is around 6-7 inches long? thanks for the info!

Synodontis tend to grow slow so it should be pricey. My only reservation is it is a hybrid so it's worth is basically based on how bad you want it and whether you care if it is a natural occuring fish.

!!! That looks exactly like my new syno SPIKE. Same body pattern and everything. His belly was black with dots but has lightened up.

I'd say that's a fair price. It would take you years to grow the usual sized one up to that size, and he's a nice looking fish. Sounds fair enough.

It is not a eupterus and it doesn't strike my eye as necessarily a hybrid, at least I have never seen such hybrids (but hybridizers keep making newer and newer ones).

If anything this syno struck me first as potentially genuine... but having looked through the genus quickly, I don't see any matches (may need to look much more diligently) but I do see a couple matches in the hybrid section - #3 and #9:

It's a pity this is hybrid (to make sure you can post your query on PCF) as it is a pretty fish but for me and any purist a hybrid is a turn off. Not the fish's fault whatsoever of course.

Another perk of posting this fish on the PCF is that the photos can be used to enhance the Cat-eLog, if Jools agrees.

Ive seen similar synos around these parts labeled as angelicus hybrids or sometimes even just angelicus which is obviously false. My moneys on eupterusxangelicus.
