Hello Matthew, they are a nonaggressive fish, which will get along well with other fish, although they have a habit of constantly touching the fish with their Barbels. All members live a long time.

Size: Medium to large, usually under 12" (30cm)
Aquarium: minimum 20 gallons.
PH: 6.0 to 7.5
Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
Food: Frozen, live , flake and tablets, some vegetable based.
Compatibility: Medium to large tankmates overall peaceful.

I used to keep my trio of syno. eup. with central American cichlids in my 150.
I found them more semi aggressive then peaceful. They defended their caves and little territories from the cichlids. They did sometimes poke my cichlids with their pectoral fin spines. Unlike the pleco who was happy to share with the cichlids.

So I would make sure the syno. eup. have caves or other hiding places they can call their own.

im planning on moving them into a 4' juvi african tank... THINK lots of ocean rock ... i get the habbitat but will they be okii with the africans as they get older n larger

They should go fine with mbuna after they get a bit of size. They hit about 10" in the wild, but I've never seen them bigger than about 8" in captivity. They do seem to school when they are young but they grow more solitary and territorial as they get older. Like Eupterus said, they do get pushy after a while. Provide lots of caves and hides (i.e., perfect mbuna habitat) and they should prosper.

I really like my 7" guy....best cleanup cat...sifts and cleans the sand....My Four lined cat chases it a bit but otherwise is fine with everone and active all day long. I guess they can suck slime coat from large plecos but anything active should be fine!

i have 4 of them in with my africans

i have one who is about 6" with my mbuna for over, just make sure they have ample hiding spots as well. they will get territorial.
