Hi all,

Someone near me is selling a Synodontis Granulosus and I want to ask you guys a few questions before buying:

1. Seller says it's wild caught, how do you tell?

2. It's probably around 5 years old and approx 5-6", what is the size they can get to in captivity?

3. Seller has kept it in a hard water Malawi setup, my water is not hard water, it's going in a tank with clown loaches, does this matter?

4. I have a synodontis clarias in the tank it will be going in which is around 8", would there be any issues?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Thanks

IMHO, you'd do yourself a huge favor if you posed your questions on Planet Catfish.

1. Seller says it's wild caught, how do you tell?
***First off, this kind of syno is highly sought after and hence very expensive, the usual going price is around $300. Second, the syno hybridizers have gotten very close to making a granulosus look-alike(s) and IMHO often only experts can tell, even some of them stumble too but all together the folks on PCF can tell. There had been many inquiries on the granulosus ID a few years ago and I've collected a bunch of links but don't remember where, here or on PCF.

2. It's probably around 5 years old and approx 5-6", what is the size they can get to in captivity?
***Sounds about right. I think they do not exceed 7"-8" total length but could be wrong.

3. Seller has kept it in a hard water Malawi setup, my water is not hard water, it's going in a tank with clown loaches, does this matter?
***It may. Granulosus comes from Rift Lakes and ideally needs hard water.

4. I have a synodontis clarias in the tank it will be going in which is around 8", would there be any issues?
***I've no clue about the red tail one but granulosus are said to be sometimes aggressive but if you ask this question on PCF, remember that a lot depends on the tank size and setup, so it needs to be stated within the question.
