I have 3 syno's about 4" long that have the white tips on the fins and small spots all over getting smaller at the head with a silve shine to them.

And 1 the same age that is half the size with a diffrent shaped head, Smaller spots and a diffrent color to it, not as silver?

What type are they???

They look like petricolas to me. great african catfish, they don't get bigger than 5 inches.
It could also be Multipunctatus, atleast I narrow your catfish ID to 2, just google the 2, :)

The larger ones you have are Syn.multipunctatus, the smaller one is probably Syn.petricola. All are related and from Lake Tanganyika. Both species are great fish! I've seen the multi's as big as 6 inches, but the petricola's rarely go past 4 inches! Hope this helps? Johnathan:D

Agree

Just for a little additional information, the best way to tell them apart, petricola are more slender, have a smaller eye, and the front of the dorsal spine is white. Both species appear to be schooling catfish, so the more the merrier. I had a friend with about 20 multipunctatus in a 100 gallon tank by themselves, and they always put on quite a show! Multipunctatus and Pollii.......the latter been very similar to Petricola but grows as large as a Multipunctatus.
