OK this is my quest. This is one of the last dream catfish i've yet to own, and to be perfectly honest I'm starting to think it doesnt exist. With as many african fish that are imported this seems to be one of the only ones either never imported, or there are legal issues with importing this fish.

but as far as i know this fish is not on any endangered species list that i am aware of.

As necro did for P. perruno, i want to find evidence of someone actually having one. A real one, not one of the hybrids that petsmart has been selling as the real thing, but an actual Synodontis longirostris.

I've spent a lot of time on the chat forum of www.planetcatfish.com , and if I remember correctly there were a couple guys in England who had Syn.longirostris. They had a very difficult time getting the ones they had, and were also looking for more! Look under the African cat forum, don't remember if there were any pics! They are out there, but apparently not often! The new book on African catfish has one on the cover, so they are real ! Hope this helps? Johnathan

Thanks. Ill check it out. I don't really like going to that particular forum. But perhaps thing have changed since i was there last. seriously doubt it. but its worth a look.

they have these guys at petsmart.. i was thinking about getting one, but was wondering how big they get and how fast the grow. i couldnt really find anything on the internet and the people at petsmart seem not to know anything about fish

they arent the real thing. i bought one from them and it grew into a hybrid. We think that they have bred Syno ocellifer and Syno euptera to make this particular hybrid. They grow roughly 6-8" regular growth rate of the two parent synos. One member swears that he got the real thing from petsmart, but never produced any pictures for a positive id.

So unless you are getting it from a reliable importer chances are it is not the real thing. It is a hybrid. but if you'd like to get one id be more than happy to take a look at it and give you a positive id one way or the other. The true thing has a long snout. I mean its pretty obvious, like giraffe cat type snout.

hmm yeah i dont remember it having a long snout.. they were only about 2.5-3 inches.. next time i'm there ill take a picture

I was just at their store today looking at deco... Since they were offloading a new shipment of fish I wondered over to see what they had. I looked at this "Synodontis Longirostrus" as they called it........so Petsmart is still selling them and I think it was $15.99. I had them write the name down so I could look it up on the internet!!! :screwy:

I bought one from pet store 2 years ago for $45 bucks. Just seen one for $69.99 a quarter the size of mine. I might get it.
