norton, ma
so ive had two petricola's for well over a year, and figure they are just about full grown now. is it true that females are darker then the males? out of the pair one is almost black in base color with black spots being darker than the base of course, while the other is a more yellowish white base. if coloration is a good judge for sexing could it be that i have a male and female? i can post pics in a day or so.. and also, they are in a 55 community at the moment, and i wish to breed them. would a smaller tank be better to "spark" mating behavior? one dedicated solely to them? also i have seen that a jar with dark marbles covered with a clay pot is ideal for catching eggs?

also, what ive heard about sexing petricola's, people say the females are much fatter becuase of the eggs. when would a female show the eggs? is there a time that she will swell up and show she's ready to breed, or is that cycle triggered by environmental influences?

just looking for any specifics i would need to know to successfully bring on the mating behavior, they are a fascinating fish! and i would love to breed some.

i've had luck breeding african mouth brooders, and hope synos can do so somewhat easily given the proper circumstances.

thanks!

drew.

Best way to judge sex is to place the fish side by side and view them from the top. The females are much wider than the males (with or without eggs).
