I currently have a pair of 5" syn's that are clearly preparing to spawn. They've been displaying to each other since I got them, I really didn't think too much about it. I thought they were just pair bonding, and the actual spawn would come 6-9 months from now. When I gave them their own tank they immediately started lip locking, displaying like crazy, and digging pits everywhere. Now I've seen a fair number of threads saying something along the lines of "I've had this pair of syns for 2 years and they finally decided to spawn". Is it unusual for syns to breed at such a small size? Or is it common, and the ones taking 1-2 years are unusual?

In my experience, I've had several different species of Paraneetroplus/Paratheraps/Vieja spawn at very small sizes. I presently have a young pair of 'breidohri' (M 3", F 2") that have just spawned. My large pair of P. feneststratus Catemaco (M 12", F 9") first spawned when the male was 4", the female 3". The smallest that I've had 'synspilus' breed is a little smaller than the size yours are.

That's good news, as I also have a pair of Catemaco's, approximately 4" long, lol! Although tbh they don't show any signs of spawning yet. They do seem to be bonding, not as instant/intense as the red heads, but seem fine together, no real aggression.
