My synspilum has been swimming strangely for the last few days and today he has been in this position.

He is still breathing and moving but I don't know what to do.

Swim bladder is the obvious thought but I don't know what will help.

He has been off his food for two days also.

Water parameters are fine and all the other occupants are fine.

Anyone have any advice?

I have just used a mag float to make him move and he has swam across the tank with his rear in the air.

I feed hikari cichlid gold as a staple with a variety of other things. They get peas once or twice a week to help with digestion.

I have read that fish taking pellets from the surface can take in air and that could cause this and also constipation can.

Any help would be appreciated as I have had this boy for 4 years without problem and he is by far my most interactive fish.

Thanks

Gary

Gary,

I am sorry he is not doing well. The symptoms suggest ammonia poisoning, but you said the water parameters are ok. Sometimes other fish aren't affected as much as others. Spikes do occur in even well established and well maintained tanks.
But it sounds like you have done everything right to keep this fish healthy so I am not completely sure what is going on. I hope he makes it.

Man that sucks. Your ammonia level is perfect. That would have been an easy fix. It could be a digestive thing like bloat, but I don't think gulping air would do it. Also a veggie diet helps prevent/cure bloat IME. I will check some of my books for possible cures, but I won't be able to do that for a few hours.

Ive read somewhere that a salt bath can help your fish recover from swim bladder disease, they also do it to koi fish. I think its baths in Epsom salts (70g / litre for 5 minutes). Maybe its worth a Google search. Good luck anyhow, it is a beautiful fish and I hope he makes it!

He may have a blockage, had this happen with discus and my africans, try putting in 1 TBSP per gallon of epsom salt and see if it alleviates it. It acts as a laxative and wont harm any of the other fish in the tank. Hope it helps!
