It's definitely settled down since I took that pic in the other thread. It's quite amazing what good water and good food can do for a fish in such a short time. These new pics make me think it's a Synspilum. But damn it these fish are a PITA to ID when there are so many hybrids going around. What do you think now?

Do you have a full shot of the fish? This guy doesn't look like one but I wouldn't mind seeing him completely.

About 6 inches long.

Tough call, a Synspilum would have gotten it's redhead by the size but who knows. Guess we'll wait on a full body shot.

That second shot look almost like either a Herichthys bocourti or pearsei but I highly doubt it.

It's late right now; I'll get a full body picture up tomorrow. I got it for free anyway, so it's most likely a hybrid.

So when should their heads color up normally?

If im not mistaken its usually around the 3" mark. I have a baby thats about 2" and is finally starting to show color.

It's a highly domesticated synspilum female imho. I've seen a lot of synspilum not color up at all. They tend to be drab versions of their long lost parents.

This is a very good possibility. However, for free? I would hang on to him just to see what he/she actually looks like in the long run!

I would only recommend getting Synspilums from a reputable source when they are small. A good strain will begin to develop its colors around 3". Not every strain will yield a true maroon red head. Their are a lot of mixed Veijas out there also. But, once you get hold of a real Synspilum, you will be able to see the differences.
