:cry::cry: Well I came home from work today and my 17" Tropical has a broken back. He can only move his pectoral fins...when he head is level with the top of the water his back bends near the middle of his body and drops about 3.5 inches down. Its probably a lost cause to try and save him. Any ideas of the best way to put him down? Clove oil? Its a sad day...

clove oil wait 10 minutes then vodka and he will just stop breathing sorry for this

Really sucks and I'm sorry to hear this..

Is there anything you can add that may be a cause or reason? This will at least help maybe someone else avoid this in the future.

What size tank? tankmates etc.

sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about that. I know nothing about gars was wondering if this a common problem? Only reason I ask because I saw another post saying something similar.

He lives with a south american lungfish, a couple ornates, sengels, a few small convicts and a couple blue severums. I got him back in 05 and everyone has lived together since then (severums added about 6 months ago). All his fins are perfect, he was never nipped at or stress. Not really sure what spooked him to crash into the side of the tank.

The tank is a 125, I was getting his new tank ready but now I am not in as much of a rush.
