Bought 3 the other day, one looks bad... Broken back?

Thanks,
Chris

i agree, that does seem very far back.

do you have any idea as to what may have caused this? spinal injuries on gar ususally seem to occur more toward the front half of the gar.

I shipped chris the fish Friday and seems to have happened during shipping, I have seen gars with spinal injuries heal but only if they were still able to move. What do you guys think and how severe is this?

Hard to say without knowing more about the fishes condition...Specifically if the caudal, dorsal and anal fins have function.

this is definitely unusually far back for this type of injury, but (unfortunately) i have had this happen recently with a smaller longnose gar. again, unfortunately it did not retain use of the dorsal/caudal/anal fins, and will have to be euthanized.

if this is the case with the t-gar (compare the posterior fins movements with your normal t-gars), then euthanizing it is really the only humane option as the fish will eventually cause more damage to itself by swimming/feeding/if its startled.

sorry to see this with the fish, hopefully it has control over the fins so some recovery may be possible--

There is little movement to the rear of the break. But there is some, so I have decided to attempt and keep him around. He actualy seems worse today and I am considering trying to either divide the tank, or carefully move him to a home of his own for a few weeks. I dunno, but will keep everyone updated!

Thanks,
Chris

****. with any gar this must hurt.but with a T-gar.....good luck dude

again, really sorry to hear about your gar :(

as for the post-break movement, don't be fooled by just vibrations/percussive movements from the front part of the fish causing the back to move. the back fins should be able to move in a fluid motion separate from the front...with a broken back the movement will be somewhat jerky or erratic. the other problem is that further movement will often times cause the gar even more injury.

i have kept gars around in the hopes that they will recover, the majority of cases they got worse and had to unfortunately be put down.

i am not saying this is definitely the case with yours, just something to be aware of and look out for. i had to put down one of my longnoses today that i had been growing out for several months...it had broken its back at the posterior part of the body and i gave it the weekend (even some food) to see if it could get better, but it just got worse and had no control of posterior fins.

keep us posted, and we're pulling for the gar to come through!--
