T5 or t8

Have a old ballast that was not being used was thinking of adding it to my tank but the sticker is warn off so I don't know if its t5 t8 t12 etc... I took it apart and it says use only 40 watt rapid start bulbs but no size any ideas.?

Sounds like a standard 8' t12 ballast.

Ok, 4 foot T12, lol. I can't think of any other bulb that is 40w besides maybe a cfl. To be clear, I'm no electrician.

Hmmm what would happen if I put a t12 bulb in and it was a t8? Is there a difference in the distance between prongs?

The prongs are the same but the T8 4' are generally energy saving bulbs and need Electronic ballast

There thinner light weight. You can try to see if it will lightup a T8. I know I tried before to replace some T8 in my garage and they wouldn't light up. The Electric company replaced all the lights at my moms business from T12 to T8 for free to save energy. They had to switch out all the Ballast.

I tried a t12 the ends light up a lil and by light up it kinda glowed then faded
