T8 light units from DIY shops

Hi, at the moment I have a 200 gallon tank, with two 40 watt desk lamps lighting it. What I want to do is have 4-8 4ft t8 bulbs lighting it. However i'm only a student and can't afford one the aquarium light units. So my question is can I go to a DIY store in the uk and get a 4ft T8 light unit that can plug in to a socket. I could then purchase some 4ft t8 aquarium bulbs and put these into the my budget light unit.

i dont see why you can't I would try to keep water from splashing up on them for any kinda light.
