Hello,
My 12" female motoro appears to have some sort of infection in her tail and I'd like some help treating it.

Here's some info:
185 gallon take with 35 gallon sump and canister filter.
pH 7.6
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20-30
Ammonia .1 (did a 40% waterchange to lower)

I recently moved a 9" freshwater tarpon in from my archerfish tanks. He's very active and skiddish so I figured that is why she was hiding so much. He is the only tankmate.

The symptoms:
Spends lots of time buried in back of tank comaired to usual.
She eats normally and behaves normally during feeding time.

The tair has three areas that concern me and lead me to beleive she's buried because she's sick, not just shy with the new tarpon.

The very tip of the tail appears slightly red and irritated, and has small amounts of the common, cottony fungus.
The second area is her barb, more specifically, her new barb. She has one that's ready to shed that appears normal, but the second one she's growing in is looking red and irritated. The gland the barbs grow out of appears slightly swollen under the skin, but that might be due to the new barb.
Finally, there is a little growth up on top of the base of the tail, parallel to the edge of the disk. It looks absolutely identical to a little red pinhead.

I tried to post some pics. Please excuse quality and typos, this is off my cell phone.

I am willing to follow ANY course of action required , and would GREATLY appreciate any and all advice. Thanks!! :)

The tarpon may be nipping at her tail for the end of the tail part the pimple I have no input and the barb part looks relatively normal from what I can tell in the picture.

You need to sort out why you have an ammonia reading in the tank you did the right thing doing a water change but that is not a permanent solution

It is possible the tarpon added too much of a bio load for the filter to handle I would continue testing over the next few days and see if it straightens itself out in the mean time keep up with the water changes when needed and look for any leftover food that could be hiding in the tank or filters.

Alright,
Ammonia has been 0 since I posted.
Tarpon isn't bugging her.

The tail doesn't look any better, if anything a little worse. Any ideas?
Thanks!

keep up on the water changes, it is the best way to help a ray heal. you could add a little salt to the tank, though keeping your water clean is the best thing to do.

did the damage occur before or after the tarpon was added to the tank?

the barb sheath in the pic looks pretty normal, but i could be wrong. hard to tell from the pic, sorry :)

the pinhead you're referring to, is it the white spot in the pic (or is that food in the tank floating by?) or is it the red spot? i'm unsure, so best to ask :)
