ON my 150 gallont ank I have a cascade canister filter and an emperor 400.. My question is I was thinking I might empty the canister of filter and carbon and fill it with as much bio type media I can and leave mechanical filtration to the other filter and just change the filter pad more often on the emp.. Do you all think the biological filtration would be of more benefit if i did this to the canister than it is currently?

I guess I'm saying I'd be losing mechanical filtration and maybe carbon, i may leave the carbon in but definately add more bio media in place of the big filter pads it has.. Would I be making the filter better or should I leave it the way it is set up curretly.. i guess as recomended by the manufacturer

That is what I always do...

Put a pre-filter sponge before the canister intake if you can, so it does not get clogged with gunk.

Yeah, I usually leave one sponge in the canister to prefilter out most of the junk. Works well that way.

Stop using carbon. It doesn't last long.I use a product called chemipure. It's a resin filled bag with a little bit of carbon in it.It lasts alot longer than carbon.

Yup ,this is your best bet. Or get some prefilter rings from fluval to trap the debris
and gunk before it gets lodged in your ceramic ring or other bio media. But ceramic rings are easy to clean anyways...

Absolutely!

Remember that biological filtration is the most important filtration of all.
