Hi,
As background info, in the 10x4x2,5´tank I have a 20" RTG aro, a 11" flagtail, 9 CA/SA cichlids ranging from 7" to 14-15", a panaque L190 and a L001 (both around 6-7"). In a 150g tank (connected to this one by a common sump) I have 4 other viejas (synsp) and a red isletas, all around 6", some of them (not all, probably) will also go into the big tank as soon as they grow a bit more.
The comm was working until I had to isolate the RTG for a month for treatment. When it was reintroduced in the tank.... things changed and the formerly peaceful RTG became very nasty with some (4 or 5) of the cichlids. These are only allowed to eat for a few seconds and are immeditely chased back to their "holes". This is going on for a couple of months so I believe I have to remove the "targetted" cichlids.
So, having explained the situation, I have always had interest in banded leporinus. They´re stunning fish that give the "wow" factor to a tank.
Bear in mind that I know thay are nasty fin nippers and read the stories of several MFK members.
One of the LFS I go to has a few god sized oned so I recently changed one of the chased cichlids for a 10" leporinus. So far it is working: the cichlids don´t bother him (and vice-versa) and the RTG (my biggest concern) seems to not even notice its presence.
So, I am considering trading the other cichlids for the lfs leporinus (I believe he has 3 more from 6" to 8-9").
My questions are:
- is keeping a group better than keeping one as regards both theirs and the other fish well being in the tank?
- If there is a group, they keep the fin nipping among themselves or work together harassing other fish?
- do they usually shoal in a big tank?
Thanks in advance for your replies
