Taking out an under-gravel filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello; I have used the UGF for a long time. A lot will depend on how much detritus/mulm/nasty stuff is bult up in the substrate. Back when i would overfee and stock heavy the substrate would become loaded , both with or without a UGF. Might be best to just leave it in place and disconnected.
I have removed many UGF's when breaking down a tank but have not tried to do so with the fish still in the tank. Were I to wish to do it, I would likely siphon out the substrate over a series of water changes untill enough substrate was gone to get at the UGF.

May I ask why you wish to remove the UGF? I have used them with good results over time and found little fault. A UGF in place has many times kept a tank going when other filtration has failed.

Remove the fish to be safe. Then vacuum very thoroughly and do a large water change. Then re-add fish.

+2 if there is a good way to remove (ugf)on an active tank I think this would be it....
