hey there all, quick post on talapia, ive just purchased a 9 oz fillet fresh, for 3 $ curious if this is safe to feed my con, jag, bichir, clown knife, and jewel?

lovely! and my con is picky flakes and shrimp only for him! bloodworms too, i pretty much knew my bichir would devour it, as he does anything.. haha but i intend to get my ck on it and off of feeders. thanks ! should i freeze it first?

It is safe to feed TILAPIA. Personally find it to be messier than smelt and shrimp though

Safe to feed in moderation only. While tilapia is a species with only trace levels of thiaminase, they're also very low in (anti-inflammatory) Omega 3. Less than 1/2 a gram per 100 grams of fish white meat. Tilapia is also high in (inflammatory) Omega 6 fatty acids. Omega 6 in high levels can lead to chronic circulatory problems, bone-joint inflammation (arthritis), and auto-immune deficiencies. In fact, omega 6 fatty acids are higher in tilapia than in 80% lean hamburger, doughnuts, and bacon.

All foods should be offered in moderation and each food item should be included with a wide variety of other foods to provide a balanced healthy diet.

ODDBALL - interesting info about the tilapia. Is there a "healthier" store-bought type of fish to be offered (also in moderation.) ? I give my fish chopped herring - they love it, but man, is it MESSY! (Oily)

The best readily available fish white meats (IMO) are halibut, cod, and pollock. these are known to be virtually free of mercury toxicity, are high in omega 3 (moderate omega 6 levels), low in fat, and for aquaria, are low in oil content that can foul tanks and filtration parts.

Oddly enough, these are the more popular species used in fried fish fast foods because of the meat's flakiness and low 'fishy' taste.
