Hi,

I'm just starting to take aquarium photography more seriously and am soon to buy my first DSLR, a Canon 350D. I write for Practical Fishkeeping magazine and intend to use my own photos.

I look forward to learning more about this wonderful art and hope some of you have the patience to answer my questions. After all, we were all there once....

If I've not bored you enough yet you can see some of my work here using a basic compact - http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/aquarium-photography/30856-close-ups-from-my-33-gal.html

George, Welcome. I saw those pics on APC, great stuff for a p&s camera, for sure. As far as advice, if you are SERIOUS, this is what your immediate kit looks like for that camera, besides the body:

Lens: either 50mm 1.8 (basic but great) or 100mm 2.8 macro (awesome awesome awesome, but pricey)
Flash : Your choice of any of the new Canon flashes, 420ex, 430ez, 550ex, 580ex.
Controller : STE2 Wireless to control the flashes.

There is more on this everywhere here on the forum, look around.

Thanks for the warm welcome Edward, and thanks for the hardware tips.

I sure have plenty to learn!

Hummm, Ed threw that 430ez out there to see if people are asleep:-)

And this is when I realise just how much I need to learn. I have no idea what you're talking about!

Just another hilarious Bill comment - this gave me a laugh :-)

Anyway, noticed it!
@George: there is indeed an older Canon EZ flash series, and there is even a model called 430EZ.

All new Canon flashes are called EX. EZ is old and not compatibel with EX series or ST-E2.

Thanks Jay and thanks for the flash info everyone.

I have to say I'm bowled over by this site, the members' skills and photography.

Inspiring stuff indeed.
