this novemeber im getting a 195 gallon tank, well im 99% sure anyways. so i may have a chance to get an african arowana in the next week, problem is right now i have only a 10 gal and a full 29 gal. my thought was to put it in the 10 gallon with its 3 corys and other minno thing then when it got about 6 inches then plop it in the 29 gallon. only problem with that is that i have a killer butterfly in the 29 gallon right now that would need moved to the 10 if there were ne signs of agression. so id be playing musical tanks if u will till november, and then if something went wrong and i didnt get the tank id have the problem of finding a home for the then pushing 8 inch african arow, tho im sure my fav and trusted lfs would take it and give me a butload of store credit.. but come november i may not be able to find another african aro, so what do yall think bout it? should i wait? or should i go for it and enjoy the thrill of rasing my first aro?

well in my experience if you have any doubts or are thinking, maybe i shouldnt do it, chances are you shouldnt. then again sometimes it works out. if you have a plan, and can accomodate your pets properly it isnt a problem is it?

If you're getting an af aro as a baby, you want to keep it in a small bare tank so that the food is in a concentrated area. But, you'll want to keep the af aro by itself. Until they're 8" or so, they have no fat reserves and need constant availability to food items.
A bare tank with a sponge filter will be all you need. The sponge filter allows food to be available on its surface for the aro to graze on between feedings. Perform a 30-40% water change every 2 to 3 days and rinse off the sponge filter every other day to remove uneaten food before it spoils.
If you can't house the aro once it gets some size on it, you won't have any problem finding someone that will want it.

i intend to have a larger tank in a few months but u think it would be fine in say a bare 10 gallon till bout 8 inches at wich piont it can move to the 29 till the new tank? is bare bottom better than sand? if i get it it should take frozen bloodwrms well as it filters through the substrate or lack of right?

thnx mei, im just trying to focus on whats best for the fish. ive always wanted one, scince i got my first 29 gallon back when i was 13, now that i can actually have 1 im totaly stoked, i think it'll go into my sandy bottom 10 gall with a little grove of plastic plants to hide in and a little mino friend till he can hold his own in the 29 then on to the future 195 with my ornate. this is of course if they come in tomarrow at the lfs, they should but u never know. i always come hre to get put off from a stupid idea and i always get encouraged !!!! lol what ever, i still love yall!!!!!:cool-1:

Ill update u guys tomarrow round noon after i make the call to see if they came in and if they did ill have 1 by wednesday. gotta remove most of the decor from the 10 gallon, and skip the whole cycling process by 10 gallons of water from my 29 gallon.

hopefully ill be the proud father of a future ]v[onster!

kritz, would u say a 10 gal should suffice as a growout? at least for a while?
