my tank is 30" tall and i have some short "kyoto grass" in it. but im not sure if they are getting enough light because they are short. my bulb is a 24" 20W Life-Glo fluorescent bulb. would i have to have taller plants to get proper lighting for them? i have had 3 other plants in the tank, but they withered away. also im not sure if the plants are accustomed to the water conditions. i have a high ph, very alkaline, very hard water, and im not sure that plants that come in a tube from topfin would like the water? comments?

the tank is 56g. so far there is only one plant left. i can get taller plants, but im not sure, i leave the light on for 12 or more hours a day.

56g? !! Your going to need ALOT more light! 2.5 - 3 watts per gallon is what i would shoot for, even more for your deep tank!

A bigger issue is your plants. The kyoto grass is not a true aquatic, and will not survive long underwater.

i have 4 4ft. T5HOs over my 29" deep tank... it is 150 gal though... try onions mine are so tall the tips float on the surface and blow around from my powerhead and filters. they stay in place nicely too once you bury those big bulbs

i might want to try floating plants cuz i was gonna get some knifefish and i think theyd like the shade.
