i was wondering if any of you have had sucess taming store bought natives and getting them to eat out of your hand, i have aa bluegill that i got at petco o couple years ago and he still will not eat out of my hand, but all my wild sunnies will even my redear that i caught a few weeks ago started hand feeding a week after i caught him, whats up with that? BTW, i also was curious to know if anyone else on here has redears or am i the only one?

I got redears! I noticed that too, no one has them. I love to feed mine snails and shrimp. I've never bought a U.S. native before, though I have tamed bluegill and largemouth bass to an amazing point. I could "pet" my largemouth bass. It was 13" an probably did not like being petted, I tried not to do it much but when showing off to friends it would let me pet it for about 10 seconds. More of a tolerance. It could just be that paticular bluegill, not all fish have the same personality. And the bass I eventually let go in my older brothers pond. Took me 3 weeks to get him that tame.

cool, are your redears tame, do you have any pics? i feed mine meals worms and sometimes crickets.

No I don't have any pics, maybe later. I feed mine various things, Omega one cichlid flakes, algae wafers, frozen brine shrimp, live brine shrimp, live ghost shrimp, cichlid pellets, worms, frozen shrimp, and scraps from last night's dinner. It really brings out their colors. I currently have 3 around 12" and they are pretty tame, a bit skittish, but tame enough to eat from my hand. Had em for 1 1/2 years.

Oh, and I can't forget snails. I dedicated a 10 gallon for snail breeding and they LOVE snails. They headbutt the glass when they see a snail. Usually the redish ones that you find in petsmart's tanks have them. Ask for them and you'll get them free. They are perfect for the redears. Garden snails are a no no.

Wow more people with red ears I had no Idea, I started mine of at smaller then a inch got it from a fish farm. I feed it cichlid pellets. It is a vary spooky fish and just started coming to the top when I feed it. Its about 3.5-4 inchs and I got spring of this yr.

That's slow growth in my book. My redears were only 6-7 inches last spring. Then again I feed them a lot and keep them around 80 degrees. I treat them like my cichlids.

i got my wild caught lmb to jump and eat feeders out of my hand when i hang the 3'' inchs or so above the water. it sometimes takes a few jumps to get it , but he gets it

Working on getting my Green Sunfish to eat out of my hand. He is very skittish and he just now started to leave his hiding spot when i walk up to the tank, I caught him 4 months ago so maybe he just has to get used to me?
