Anyone ever seen one done?

Something like:
2-3 Mpimbwe fronts
12 Tropheus brichardi "Mpimbwe"
5 (1m,4f) Neolamprologus calliurus (Mpimbwe)
5 Neolamprologus callipterus (Mpimbwe)
5 Xenotilapia flavipinnis (Mpimbwe)

Shells, Val, Rocks...

IMO I would just keep the fronts in the 250 alone, those other fish are too small and would probably do better in a 50 g as a tang tank if you want to mix them.

I want to do a large community. If fronts have to be out to do that then I am ok with that. I might end up doing just small fish - loads of one species of shellie and some rock dwellers.

you could do that, but it would take lots and lots of small fish to make it look good unless you put lots of rock and caves. I would probably start out with the smaller fish and let them grow a year or two then once they are like 3+ inches thn maybe introduce a couple SMALL fronts :)

I dont want to sound too negative but I just dont want what happened to me, to happen to you. I had some fairly nice probably 3+ inch brichardi and a couple smaller calvus and the ended up as snacks for the fronts. the fronts are very preditory on smaller fish and some of the fish you mentioned dont get very big. I just dont want you to wake up some morning and find all your smaller fish gone, especially if you stock a bunch in a 250, those are expensive snacks :D

Yea I understand.

I will probably just be safe and go with no fronts.

When a say a large colony of shellies. I mean like 50.

Actually I like that idea better.

Is it possible to mix different species of shelldwellers?

How about just a Tang biotope?
in a tank that big, I would do :

50 Tropheus
10-15 Neo. Leleupi (color)
6-10 gobies (eretmodus)
20 Petrochromis (of contrasting color to the Trophs)
10 Gold occelatus

Wallah. Sit back and see lots of activity, lots of color, lots on interesting behavior.
