hey ive been working with malawi cichlids and a little bit of SA cichlids but i wanna get into tanganyikas. im assuming tanganyika cichlids require similar water conditions just with different pH.
can you guys recommend some good fish besides the frontosa. i already have a burundi. shell dwellers or large fish is good but something with more of a frontosa look is better.

can't remember the recommended hardness or TDS but I keep my shellie tank at a pH of 9.2. You can keep them lower than this, but the higher helps with breeding.

Look into the julidochromis, they are way awesome fish to keep.

ive always liked calvus

or you cant go wrong with some shellies

well i personally recomend keeping julies and A. calvus or A. compressiceps. both are rock dwellers and keep their thing to their own species, sometime you just got a nasty jullie but i have good experience with them. to mix julies with front try to get the larger species.
ophthalmotilapia ventralis is from the featherfin group, it is compatible with front but you may need a lopen sand beach for them

try to avoid andy fish smaller than 6in cause if it fits on a front mouth you can bet it will end there.

avoid also the tropheus species because the may require diffrent diet and are very sensitive to high protein food.

like the look of teh calvus but not its colors or other variations. are there any fish that have the looks of a calvus with darker and solid colors.

Comps. Julies. Opthalmotilaia, many Neolamprolongus species (some are nasty though), groups of Cyprichromis, Enantiopus sp. It also helps to know what size tank you are going to run. There are many open water species and rock dwellers that can be mixed. Tropheus and shellies would best be kept in species only tanks due to special requirements.

altolamprologus calvus has three color morphs, the black the white and the yellow.
altolamprologus compressiceps is related to the altolamprologus calvus, has more color morphs and its diffrent from the calvus by having a higher body and a shorter mouth

my front is only about 2.5 inches long and he is always slow to eat. do you think the shellies will be able to keep up with my fronts slow growth?

I've had a N. brevis for the last year and a half, and he's a really cool fish. Pretty shy for a while, but now he's out all the time and he's got great, subtle color. I think I have a pic of him somewhere...
