Escargot shells are commonly used, biotopes usually consist of sand and lots of shells with a few small pebbles/grades of sand.

I saw one on YouTube where it was a couple big rocks and some shells but would sand ad say 20 or so shells work? For 6 brichardi's or should I use more shells?

I have a 40 breeder with 10 Lamp. occellatus. It has 50lbs of pool filter sand, 3 Anubis and larger rocks for the deco. I use escargot shells for them. To mix it up a little I added to Spiny Peacock eels and the 5 Swordtails I used to cycle the tank.

I did mine with snail shells and sand and a rock or two. I don't have any pics atm though. Also you said brichardi, neolamprologus brichardi are not shell dwellers they are rock dwellers and get bigger than shell dwellers

Escargot shells work great but they do break down in water over time. A good rule of thumb with shellies is to put 2 shells per fish in the tank so they always are able to pick their own. That and to keep them in a colony if you can. A tank that is shallow and wide works better than tall and long. Their territories aren't that big and they don't usually cause any damage when they spar. For some reason, I forgot how many I actually have. I have 13, not 10.
