My 450 gallon tank has a huge piece of drift wood in it. The wood came from the Adirondacks and has been in a fish tank in my living room now for 2 almost 3 years. The wood is probably hemlock, but I don't know for sure. It releases enough tanins that if I don't do a 50% water change every 4-5 days the water looks like tea. I kinda thought that after a year or so that would stop, but it hasn't.

I bought a used tank that came with the water polisher pictured below. I have never used one and still haven't bothered to set it up, but I was wondering, would it help remove the tanins and allow me to go to a normal water change routine of 50% once every 8-10 days.

The drift wood was in a 210 for most of the time and I didn't mind the constant 50% changes, but on the 450.... man that is a LOT of water!

Would it work, does anyone know?

The filter will help but if you wanne get rid off the tanins in your tank just add purigen.
I had the same problem with my tank until i discovered the magic of purigen, now i have about 2.5lt of the stuff in my 150 and the water is clearer and crispyer than bottled water you buy at the shop.

Hmmm, never heard of that stuff. Thanks, I will look into it.
