Since air pumps and air stones main purpose is to agitate the surface of the water, wouldn't using a Wet/Dry sump with overflows do the same thing, there fore eliminating the need for air stones in the same tank?

What do you guys think? Am I missing something else that air stones do?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I never use them on any of my wet/dry setups.

Not only that but I'd think the water passing over/through the "dry" part over the media (be it bioballs, scrubbies, whatever) would do a great job of oxygenation. Similar to water running over rapids in a stream.
