OK guys a couple of fish have taken to some serious aggression in their maturity. Particularly between my tiger oscar, jaguar cichlid and my monster of a convict (with kok) and my chocolate cichlid. Is there anything I can do other than rescaping and adding dithers (I have 6 silver dollars in the tank). The jaguar cichlid (14 in) has really put a beating on the oscar. (14 in)

The setup: 220g, 2 FX5's.

  • Florida Gar x1
  • Silver Dollar x6
  • Chocolate Cichlid x1
  • Geophagus albios x1
  • geophagus brasiliensis x3
  • Convict x1
  • Tiger Oscar x1
  • Jack Dempsey x2

Most large territorial cichlids (especially Central Americans like managuene) require about 4 sq ft of territory to themselves , and anything that they consider a competitor crossing into that area will be challenged .
That's at least half your tank, so I doubt a simple rearrangement will change centuries of natural instinct. Your oscar may just be the first of many.
Sounds like your jag needs its own tank, to save the lives of the others.

I am surprised you are having problems in a 220. IME the only thing that works is a divider or remove the problem fish. Rearranging the tank and lowering temps never works, and if it does it is temporary.

I have had the oscar for 2 years and never had a problem with aggresion. People always talked about the aggression, and I honestly thought I had a real oddball dopey oscar, that is until the jag cichlid was introduced.

The Jag is more than likely the aggressor in the situation if you remove the O he's probably going to go down the ranks to the next weak link. I would remove the Jag if you want a fairly peaceful tank.

Agree, it sucks but that's the chance we take keeping bruisers together.

Any pics?

Unfortunate situation there, even heavily planting probably wouldn't have a big impact. Is the convict a real terror?
