i have a couple of piranha and want a differant background for there tank.

i want it dark but am now sure to but a one that has plants on but is very dark and natural or to put a sheet of plain matt black paper along the back...

i am not sure how that would look, anyone tried it?

it would probably look ok for a bit, but the problem is water and paper dont mix. As soon as some water gets on it your background is going to look like dookie butter on a hot dog bun. I would suggest either doing a tear down and painting the back of your tank preventing water damage to your background and water spots on the glass OR go for a vinal/plastic background and adhere it to the back glass.

well, to be honest im not quite sure the effect im after is a great deal to do with the tank beackground.

althought i do want a dark background, i want my piranha's to look dark (like closer to really dark grey/black than silver), i'm not sure if this is changed much by a darker background or weather it just gets a darker colour with maturity???

Cant help you there champ, I dont know enough about P's. I do know a lot of fish, esp cichlids will darken up with a dark background/substrate to help blend in but I'm not sure about P's.

I bought blue construction paper and put it on the back of my 150. It still looks fine 6 months later...

It could work, Idk now crazy P's are at feeding but my fish splash and would deff get the paper wet.

I bought a box of 2.5% window tint from wal-mart for about $10 and installed it myself. Here's a pic.........

the window tint is a really good idea.
