Hey everyone. This is my problem. I have a glass tank that's 60 inches long. The stand I plan to use is a wooden one with a 1 1/2 inch lip that goes up on the sides and front. The tank fits perfectly by length but the tank is about 6 inches wider than the stand. I plan to get 1/2 inch plywood and drill and screw it on to the top of the stand. Then I plan to use 3 thick L-shaped braces connected to the bottom of the plywood and the back of the stand. Do you think that will be stable enough. The tank is 168 gallons, made of glass and very heavy. Any advice is appreciated, The Doctor

Will the six inches be hanging off the back of the stand? It would be much better if you could keep the weight centered over the stand...or run some vertical supports from underneath your plywood to the floor.

Not sure how wide the tank is, but even if its 24", having 25% of the weight off centered won't be good.

It sounds like you have some good ideas to support the base of the tank itself.

Good luck!

I had a 65 tall sitting on a 35 gallon stand for years. 6 inches difference hanging off the back but was always nervous about it. A bigger tank like yours i think is doable if you brace it well enough. Maybe you could add some wooden legs at the back also.

If building another is not an option, I'd go with the idea of a bar table type support, meaning 90 degree elbow supports connect the extra 6inches to the stand, then for more support, run 2x4's or 4x4's underneath the extension to the floor

That sounds like a decent plan to make sure your tank is supported. It is a good back up plan if you cannot afford to buy a new stand or to make one. I think it should support the tank just fine.
That is exactly what I would do.

As long as you center the tank over the stand it should work, not so sure if I would try it myself.

Makes me very nervous, and like stock investments - I need to be able to sleep with myself. That's a lot of weight, time and investment for something to go wrong, however, I'm a worrier! In fact I recently purchased an all-pine stand for my 90g and I'm going to reinforce it with more wood. Even though it's made for my tank and claims it can carry the load, I just don't trust it.:nilly:

Build a stand FTW!! post pics!
