tank building question

I have read some of the DIY tank building articles, but still have a question...

Once I have placed all 4 pieces of glass in position, and sealed with aquarium sealant, do I have to band the top and Bottom, like on a store bought tank?

If so how do I do this?

You can make one from wood or metal if it's necessary (not if you use cross bracing).

How big of a tank?

Glass thickness?

Only building a 40 tall...so...30 long x 24 high x 12.5 front to back. Most likely using 1/4 inch thick glass, unless 1/2 inch is a better option? Just wasn't sure if a type of banding would be necessary or not. Never built one before. Thanks for the help!
