I want to build a tank, but have no experience and want to know how difficult it actually is. I was thinking about a 5'x2'x1'. What thickness glass/acrylic should i use? Should i use glass or acrylic? Which is easier and less expensive? How should i construct the frame?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

im in the process of building one, been a total pain in the butt, and ive built a lot of stuff. everything has to be so flat and even, when you put a thousand pounds of water in it, the slightest stress on the walls or floor could crack the glass or break the bondo lining. Look for a deal before you try the DIY. if you can get a 125 for 200 bucks or under hop on it. Buid the stand and canopy yourself, not near as stressfull. ... everyone told me not to diy a tank, but i am, sometimes you just have to say wtf and do it. Anyway pm or email me or put question on my 135 thread, will help you any way i can.

best of luck

oh, heres some mistakes ive made already,

let the menards guys load my plywood, got home and its the worst, most warped wood ive ever seen, and i was dumb enough to try to make it work.

then i didnt put my supports on before i bondo'd, they got all funky and had to do a lot of messin around to get it fixed.

also i see your in nj, this is definatly an outdoor project, even in the basement i stunk the whole house up, wife made me bring it outside.

thats a few of them! also ive spend over 250 now, and i got the glass for 2 bucks. some stuff i can bring back cuz i wont us it, but its not that big of a money saver compared to buying a used all glass

At that size, I would buy one. I also am in the process of building my own and it is a huge pain. It will be worth it because the size I wanted won't fit through the door and was really expensive. Right now, I'm about $2000.00 into it. As for advice, the GARF plans need to be structually reinforced, and so not use truck bed liner to seal the wood. Use epoxy.
