There's all sorts of info on this site and on the now famous garf.org. Do a search here on MFK and you'll be reading a lot of information. Soak it up. Take your time, take notes (or print it out) and eventually you'll feel comfortable to start your own.

Whether or not it is cheaper depends on how you plan to do it.

Generally you would use standard plate glass for building and Clear window and door silicone to seal it.
