Ok, I'm replacing my 38 gal with a 75 gal, and it's going in the exact same spot, and I want to break down the 38, put the fish and water in buckets, set up the 75, add gravel, decorations, water, fish, and new filter, and be up and running same day. My worry, is not cycling the new tank, but here is what I plan to do. This weekend I am going to buy a couple boxes of Biomax ceramic ring media, and put it in a clay pot in my current tank. It will stay for a couple months. When I do the changeover, I will use this media in the bottom 2 trays of an fx5, and in the top tray I will put some gravel from old tank and sponges from HOB filter on old tank.

This should be fine, no? All advice and help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Followin ya'. I am doin' the same thing.

You want water to flow through your new media while in the tank, I would add a power head to draw water through the media or use air stones to bubble up through it and draw water through it so that the media can be fed with nutrients.

I don't really want to buy a powerhead that I don't plan on using in the future, but I can put the media directly under the HOB, so I get some flow through it. I also have an air stone that I cold put underneath it.

Just put the media from the HOB into the FX5 and you should be OK. Using the existing gravel in the new tank is good as well if possible. If the same fish are going in the new tank you should be fine with the bioload. Of course you could add a bunch of new Biomax to the FX5 as well, it can only help in the future and might as well use up the space.

Burt :)
