My confidence has grown in fish keeping and much due to great feedback I have received here at MFK.
But with that said fish are for the most part fragile when out of their natural environment.
I learned this hard lesson this morning.
I brought up a 140 gallon and ran a two week cycle with water treatment etc.
I moved selected fish from my 100 G over and watched as they ventured into their spacious home.
I have an FX5 and two marineland 400's with plenty of aeration in the 140,
BUT!!! When I made the switch I shared some of the BIO media to my older FX5 and did a 20% water change. Somehow in my haste and with a few beers I left the aeration in the 100G off over night.
When I awoke I had 15 casualties. Floating bodies and everyone else was at the surface sucking for air.
Apparently the amount of changes coupled with ZERO AERATION resulted in a low oxygen situation that killed quite a few of our pets.
I saw them all at the top of the tank and quickly turned on the air and checked all water params. I changed out about 10% of the water and everything is now good.
I lost my favorite Malawi and my older tigers.
Pretty sad morning around our house.
But with that said we did move our baby aro last night and he survived without issue in the new tank.
Possible root causes?
Zero Aeration for 8 hours
Changing too much water
Changing too much BIO media in one shot
Too many changes in one night
