I am new here and slowly trying to research to eventually enjoy a bamboo shark or two. My question is would a 96x48x16 tank be ok? My concern is the 16" depth. I was thinking about housing a zebra moray and maybe a ray in the tank with at least 1 bamboo. Any opinions would be much appreciated.
Depth isn't all that important, but 16 inches does sound a little shallow to me... I would wait for other feedback on the shark (I'm thinking an epaulette would be alright), but I'd nix the moray right away. Morays do need some depth, and given their propensity to jump out, I wouldn't risk it. Is there any way you can go taller?
Yeah I definetely would like to go taller, I just happened to find a deal for a tank with sump and stand for like $400. I know the footprint is important, I just wasn't sure on the depth. I agree that 16 sounds a little shallow, that is why I was interested in hearing opinions. With the morays, do you just have a glass top to keep them from escaping, or does it actually need to be weighted down? I have a reef tank now and just want to get as much info as possible before I start investing serious $ in a setup. Wife says choose between pool table and shark tank. Well I don't play pool that much so it is out the door!!! LOL!
That's certainly a killer deal, I just don't think you've got the water volume or height for much more than a single shark. Honestly, if you've got the go ahead from the wife, take your time. 8x4 is a great footprint, but try to get 24-30" of height. That not only increases the water volume and gives your livestock more room, it increases the viewing area a huge amount.
Used aquarium equipment is dirt cheap. Bide your time and you'll end up with something much cooler.
Thanks for the advice. I think I am just gonna keep looking for something deeper. 8x4 is what I really want. I would like to buy used because of cost. I think it is crazy the price difference between new and used!
Yeah, stuff depreciates like crazy. 8x4 is a great footprint, and there are 480's out there. Just keep and eye out and an open mind in case something even better comes up.
