i recently bought a tank that i was told was 250 gal. I read that the equation for us gallons is LxWxH divided by 231. is this correct, because when i got the tank home i measured it and according to that equation it it 157 gal? :screwy:

That is the correct equation. To be truly accurate, you should use the internal dimensions of the tank. However, all of the manufacturers I know of use the external dimensions to calculate their aquarium sizes.

Sorry to hear that the tank is not what you were told it was, but a 175 is not a bad sized tank. Have fun with it.

thanx for the input, it was still a great deal, i bought it and a 40 long for 75cents a gallon, so the big one was only 187.50 with gravel heat lights and filter, so im not complaining, but i did need to know its true size.

i will post the dimensions shortly, the men in this house stole the tape measure, and i cant find where i wrote it down at. however i would appreciate if someone did check my math

aha i found it the tank is 71 in long by23 in wide by 22 in high, divide by 231, i get 155 gal, these are inside measurements.

bought it from a friend of a friend and it came with everything for $.75 per gal ($187.50) filters gravel lid heat light decor the whole nine yards, all iahad to do was add water and fish

this is the reason i say the way you talk about tank size is vrap buy saying you have a 180g or a 250g that could be any shape or size

just tell the shop you buy the tank from what lenght, width and depth you want as it save loads of problems
