My 3yr old son, found a way to build and climb his way to my tank lid. He used this new skill to drop an 8oz bottle of my wifes Bath & Body Works, scented oil concentrate in the tank, while I was out of town. Long story short, it has been swirling around the surface for a few days, and the only reason the fish are alive is because of my ugly airstone, blowing in air below the surface.

Right now I need to take some corrective action and I am at a loss. I've got a couple things going, but, no success yet.

If anyone out there has any ideas, please let me know.

Thank you for readiing and adding any ideas you may have.

first thing to do is shut all filters/aeration off for a few minutes.

let the oil stablize on the surface

take paper towel and lay it on the surface of the water for a few minutes, this will absorb most of the oil at the surface.

remove.

repeat.

then turn back on your equipment, and do a 1/3 water change.

replace your carbon with fresh carbon.

thats about all you can probably do.

good luck

Yah, I'm by Lake Erie plenty of boat stores, but, nothing till morning. I guess if the fish lasted this long, another 14 hours won't be the end of them.

Yah thats about what I've already done so far. I did cut the currend and air for a bit and tried some previously sanatized wash cloths, but, it's like I would need about 1000 it seems, since I'm getting lots of water too.

I pulled out some of my carbon and put it in a sterile bucket. I rinsed it and let it sit a few minutes and there was hardly any oil in there. I did the same thing with my canister filter medium. There was absolutly NO oil in there. I'm thinking that the oil that was on the prior carbon is from me removing it from the tank threw the oil.

They are good to have around just in case...go to the one that has a fuel dock first...they have them for sure, in case of fuel leakage on the water...;)
