As it goes I'm in the final stages of designing my new tank and now I'm starting to question things. Is there any downside to having the tank sitting flush against the wall? Aside from the obvious of drilling the bottom and having the overflow take up real estate in the tank. The only thing that really has me concerned is moisture somehow getting back in between the wall and tank. I'm starting to consider drilling the back for an external and running a coast to coast overlfow.

Any thoughts? Tank dimensions are 94x22x22 for what its worth.

Any vibrations from the tank will be amplified through the hollow spaces in the wall if there is direct contact. Any moisture vapor or splashed water from the tank will ruin the wall's drywall.

To add to Oddball Oddball : access.

For instance, if any water gets back there you'll have hard water stains on the glass... good luck getting that cleaned up without moving the tank.

Hello; I have always had a space between a wall and a tank. Tubes and wires run back there . HOB power filters need the space if they are used.

I would be concerned with all of the above plus mold. With a small space and lots of warm water around and very little air movement, it's much easier to create the common conditions for mold.

Normally, we would be able to easily rectify those conditions rapidly with a fan, a dehumidifier, or a plumber.

I too would be worried about humidity. It could damage the wall easily and water damage isn't cheap to repair.

Plus if you wanna make it easy, put the plumbing/hob stuff/cords back there. I have a gap on my tank, just enough to fit my ac110. Unless you can do it through the wall (like an access door on the other side maybe? IDK) or on the sides of the tank.

Also for what it's worth the paint is so crappy in this apartment that if you don't run the bathroom vent, the paint surfactant starts leaking because of the humidity and it looks like earwax/boogers/yellow ghost pee coming out of the wall. EUGH. I have to wash and dry them weekly. Been afraid of that stuff leaking over the tank but I've been lucky so far.
