I have limited space and already have a 220 setup so I was thinking of getting a custom tank made up for me. It will approximately be 80 gallons and the footprint will be: 48"Lx24"Wx16"T do you think that would be a good tank for a Rhom for life?

I plan on doing live plants so I didnt want it too tall and I want to keep the weight down as well since I already have a 220 setup in the apartment.

Custom sounds very expensive my friend. I have just about that foot print but mine is a 150 30"tall. Try and find this tank before you customize your 80. It will probably be much cheaper and your rhom would be much happier. My Lucifer loves to swim up and down all around the tank. Rhoms live in deeper water and it will like it much more.

my two pennies.

I had a 150 tall before my 220, I just didnt like it. It is almost tall as it is long and it doesnt really help with keeping the weight down, the only other suitable substitute for the 80 would be a std. 75.

Their may be other options but to answer your question, yeah that footprint would work for a rhom for life.

Foot print is really nice however, being only 16" tall that tank is too short to house a rhom forever.

what size is the rhom?
if you are getting a big one and is limited to a 4ft length tank then how about 120g? 4x2x2?
if getting a small rhom, depends on size you can start with maybe a 40/50g breeder and upgrade in couple years to a standard 75g, that will last you few more years.

right now he is only about 3" or just a little bigger. right now I am stuck in a small apartment and I will be here for at least another 2 years because I will be going back to college and it is a 2 year course and then the 3rd year is a paid co-op. so when I start making some decent money I will be able to move and then I will have space for another big tank.

The 120 seems like a better idea, I forgot about the footprint of it.

if just 2 years then a 40g or 50g breeder would be ok, if you can get a 75g that will be plenty room for 2-3 years. 120g would be even better.

thanks for the help JP, I will keep an eye out for a used 75 worse case I will go by a new 40g breeder; He can still stay in the 10 for a little while longer so that will give some time to look for a 75gal.
