One of my many quirks as an aquarium hobbyist is my love for sand burrowers and benthic ambush predators. I would love to have a tank with a wide open sand area with an assortment of these kinds of fish.

Some possible combinations that come to mind... feel free to add suggestions for any size group. Please tell me about more sand-burrowers and benthic ambushers!

Mini-sand pit of sudden doom (well, sudden doom for worms and shrimp maybe) - Kuhli Loaches, banjo catfish, peacock eels, spaghetti eels, malaysian trumpet snails, etc.

Sand pit of sudden doom - prehistoric monster fish (thalassophryne amazonica), chaca chaca, spiny eels, etc.

Mega-sand pit of sudden doom - pacman catfish, sleeper gobies, water cow, lurker puffers (though they would probably kill the others), etc.

Brackish sand pit of sudden doom - grunting toadfish, stonefishes, eel-tailed banjo catfish, etc.

obviously I am not sure about compatibility for any of these. Just thought I would share my weird idea with you all

If you want to go the puffer route, may i suggest a congo puffer, T.murius best lurker ever..

Although any other fish most likely will also get eaten...

May I suggest a saltwater reef but the star being a zebra mantis shrimp? I believe they are spear feeders that strike strong and true. While they r lurking around they will still have a reef for u to look at. Or maybe some anglers? A sarragasum angler strikes like I think you want although they don't hide in sand

Congo's are awesome ambush killers. Fugu puffers will burrow themselves too and they like to get out and swim around as well.

Seems fanatastic... especially when it comes to meal time. I believe you will be spending an hour enjoying. Pacman cat and Devilcatfish seems elligible.

One of the coolest breeding behaviors of South American cichlids is the spawning behavior oif Acarichthys heckelii. The burrow deep into the sand and use it as a nest to raise the fry. I would love to keep them in a tank where I could provide this one day.

Yea I think it would be pretty sweet. I did think about adding bagarius suchus to the list for the big boys, but I dunno much about them.

Puffers would be cool but I would ideally like to have a mixture of sedentary(ish) fish in the sand pit, and when it comes down to it I'm more of a catfish guy than a puffer guy.

@ fishy12

hah with a mantis shrimp it would be more like a killing floor. Also, yes if I ever do get a marine tank I will undoubtedly try out an anglerfish/frogfish of sort. I would also love to have a collection of Batrachoids
