Hey guys in about 2 weeks My 180 is gonna have to go into my garage which is not insulated and detached from my house. I'm not worried about the heat as the garage door will be open most the time with a fan and lots of aeration. My main concern will be the winter. What are your suggestions as sometimes it can get to maybe 35F in LA.

100MM EPS foam painted and glued onto the back and 2 sides with sheets for the top and run water proof led lights under the foam, Make sure they are water proof!!

At night place 1 more sheet on the viewing panel to hold the heat in and paint this black. your temperatures wont drop at all. I tested this method on a 2ft tank to prep for my turtle tank which is outside. The 2FT held its heat over the night without the heater in the tank. During the day I lost a bit because I cant use LED lights for turtles so the top and front have been open but its holding quite well.

if you want a nicer looking system =P build a stud stand/wall and pack it with EPS then stain the outside and have the view panel showing then cover it with a sleeping bag at night.

Or spend countless $ on heating air to heat your water :P

The most cost effective method is to heat the air and not the water. Multiple heaters will work but they will be on a lot on the colder day. If your not going to do much work......a small room that could be insulated. I would put insulation where you could and maybe on the coldest night run a kerosene or space heater with the doors shut. Don't put it right up against a wall and insulate the wall behind the tank.

Insulating the tank is best overall. Heating what is most important not the whole room and what not. Insulation and foam will make it hold heat really well then just let the heaters work like normal.

It's not a big deal. I live in Los Angeles and my tanks are in the garage which is also detached from the house and not insulated. During the winter, I run (2) 300w in my 110g, (1) 200w in the 75g, and (1) 100w in my 20g. No issues and they've been set up for about 4 years now.

Well i'm sure I could get a 1000w heater and heat up the tank without any problems. But I don't want to be paying like crazy for heating costs if I can help it.

building 3 walls and insulating that is not a possibility as this is my parent's house and they would not be happy with that. I might just go with buying insulation sheets for the sides of the tank. Does anybody know how much it will cost?

Is the point of the LED to warm up the water?
