With a kiddo on the way I need to clear the spare room for a nursery, only spot for my beloved channa pulchra is under my discus tank.

While planning the new stand to accommodate the channa tank I decided to go a while different direction and build a ply tank into the stand to optimise the space I had available.

My discus tank is 130 x 50 x 50 cm and I wanted to build the channa tank as big as I could and with only 70cm spare I can't go no wider and glad prices get too much at more than two feet deep and my arms ain't that long !!

It was very much a make it up as I build it type of build .

2x4 inch timbers for the stand and 12mm ply with 12mm glass. Fibreglass lined . Ask any questions u want and I will do my best to answer them.

I have some spare timber I'm gonna add to give even more support.

Discus tank will sit on a 5 2x4s layer flat and glued together and two inches of polystyrene to spread the weight

There is two inches of wood on each side ad there will be a 2x4 secured Top and bottom, top will also be reinforced with some steel angle.

It's gonna have an eheim ecco and fluval 105 with a pump mounted inside the tank ( in built pump props removed on externals and not running ) both top and bottom tanks will have a seperate cabinet for filters .

so i have a quick observation and maybe i missed something. but how are u going to get into the tank itself once the discus tank is on top of it? I only ask because i did a similar build last year, a 15 gallon sump/waterfall into my 55 and i forgot all about cleaning and feeding...left myself abtou a 2' window on half a side, which being a bigger guy, proved difficult.

Finished The steel front panel brace for the bottom tank and the main part of the new canopy for the discus tank. It's all being painted and then hopefully fitted at the weekend.

Also hope to start the over tank light for the discus tank at the weekend.

Thought I'd post a before shot to show you what I'm starting with. I built this tank about four years ago using mainly discarded materials. Originally my moray tank it's now a discus comunity tank.
