So im trying to do a 200g on the cheap, now all i need are lights and fish and im out about $700

one great deal i found was that the sand from my lfs would have been about $300 and i got basically the same thing as playsand from home depot for like $15

anyhow, now im looking for a way to do the lighting without spending $1500 on a 60" lighting rig from the lfs.

right now im thinking of getting 2 36" flourescent shop lights from home depot and either hang them from chains in the ceiling or wall hangers - and put some mice coralife bulbs in them or something.

anyone had anything like this work for them?

Do you need the lighting for plants or anything alive? Or is it just for fish?

You can get shop lights pretty cheap on craigslist or at hardware stores, you can even get an 6-8 footer for pretty cheap. Its not the best for a planted tank, but if all you need is light, it works.

awesome, im glad this will work, Im not interested in plants, but i may throw some plants in a sump once i get around to making one of those, then ill just throw a light on that

They work great!!

And they work even better when they are plugged in

LMFAO!!!!!!!!:ROFL: i was thinking the same thing but you beat me to it. and what are the little lights in there? are they "night" lights?
i used a 4 ft shop light kit then bought real lights from petsmart and then have 2 2fts as night lights and my tank is 6 ft long

I was in the process of putting the two part canopy back together after a tank cleaning when I took that picture. Those little round lights are 9 watt fluorescent under cabinet lights that I got at Menards. They light the tank for most of the day then the timer kicks the strip lights on for 3 hours in the evening.
