Hi....

I've seen some gorgeous tanks here on MFK, and I think alot of the "look" goes along with the lighting.

Can anyone explain the different types of lights, colour's and any general tips.

I would say having a cobalt blue backing with the right lighting is the best mix

by the "right" lighting do you mean a more neutral colour?

Currently I have a long blue light and one beige light...

What purpose does the blue have?

Like me you are in search of the right light for your tank. I'm still looking for the right combination though..

Seems to be quite tricky!

But I have to say I'm still looking for the right combination of lots of things for my tank!

The blue is probably just a t5 actinic bulb, which is for algae and coral growth in marine systems. In fresh, just looks cool I guess.

I like the Power-Glo & Aqua-Glo bulbs. Most of the big tanks on MFK seem to use one of these or both to create bright, vibrant colors. The simplest way to pick a lamp is color temperature(measured in degrees Kelvin, K) & brightness (measured in lumens). Choose a color temp over 6500K for most plants & fish. I like the 10,000K Aqua-Glo for my Loaches color. The Power-Glo is 18,000K, which is too blue for me, but it produces more lumens...
