Hi everyone. I'm planning on getting a 6' or 8' tank soon depending on what is a bargain. I want to stock it with a shoal of clown loaches, a couple kinds of rainbows, and a few siamese algae eaters. Does anyone else have some suggestions for compatible tank mates that are a little on the larger size that won't harm the aforementioned fish? I thought of angels, but I'm not sure they'd do well with all the buzzing around the other species would be doing.

I'd hold off on the SAE, and get some bristlenose, you could put angels, and or discus, as well as some barbs of some sort..

I'm not a fan of silver dollars, or tinfoil barbs or anything like that. "Cichlids" is far too general.

Why would you hold off on the SAE? I've heard they eat all kinds of algae and not just a few like plecos do.

okay then, I was reserving this idea for my own tank BUT...

peaceful larger and medium fish. For example there are lots of cichlids who are more peaceful in nature such as Severum, Chocolate Cichlid, All types of Geophagus, and as for other cichlids, as long as they arent the hyper aggressive species then all that extra room would calm them down. Now that you have a nice bunch of cichlids you can add things like bala sharks, Tinfoil barbs, pink tailed chalceus, or other larger barbs etc. For the bottom you can have anything that will be peaceful to the fish (no huge predatory catfish) you also leave yourself open to have lots of oddballs, seriously with a tank like that the world is your oyster, and if you go for medium aggressive/peaceful community then there will be a much higher chance everything will get on fine.

and if not then i suggest you have a quarantine tank nearby to move any fish that are beating up others or being beaten up too badly :)

ps Im not saying have EVERYTHING i mentioned Im merely giving you ideas :)

Thanks for elaborating. I would like some severums in the tank, however I would be scared that they would eat the rainbows, and outgrow/eat the clowns. I'd probably be buying many small 2" or so clowns and they're slow growers. Does anyone have experience mixing severums with these fish?

Severs are fairly peacful, as well as Uaru..

funnily enough I do. the severums I had didn't touch the rainbows, they were too fast. as for the clown loaches, clowns make great companions for most fish!

I know that clowns can live with nearly anything, but I'm just not sure about when they're very small. I know they have those spines for defense, but I'm sure it wouldn't stop a larger cichlid if it wanted to eat a small loach. I've also heard that severum are living lawn mowers and will devour anything green in the tank. That limits my decorating style I suppose haha. Uaru too!
