I recently added a green terror cichlid to my tank and noticed he nips at my pair of motoro rays. He doesn't seem to nip them hard as I can't see any marks on their discs, he only does it if they get a bit to close to him. The green terror does seem to have a bit of attitude about him.

Other tank mates are JD and 5 silver dollars. I've never seen any other fish nip at the rays, only the GT.

Should i be worried about this nipping? I dont want anything to happen to my rays. Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally would remove the GT because nipping may lead into stress and infection for the Rays. About an hour ago removed a African Peacock Cichlid from a aquarium with Senegal Polys because he was nipping them.

+1

Rays don’t do well with acute stress or little bits over a long period of time. It will lower the immune system and can lead to much worse problems down the road.

Also keep IN mind as the gt gets bigger it will most likely get meaner. They call them green terror for a reason I suppose. Lol

Thanks for the advice fellas. Ive got the GT in the sump for now. He's around 6 inches, do you think after a bit of time out and adding more decor to the tank i should give him another go before selling or trading him in for

I've been wanting a nice male GT for a long time and hopeful i can make it work, however, my rays come first before anything else.

get another tank... best of both worlds
If i could I would, but my wife wont allow me to set up another one in the house. Plus ive already got a spare tank in the garage ready to go for when the rays breed.

Its just shame that the GT nips the rays because theres plenty of room in the 230g and would love to keep him.

How about a divider than?
