I was wondering if any one has successfully kept geophagus, silver dollars, or severums with more aggressive fish like green terrors and red terrors. How long could this last in a 180gal?
I have some pretty big silver dollars in with a female Festae about 5". They are a little too big for her to catch, but they really piss her off from time to time. They've only been together for about 6 months, but they seem to coexist alright. Maybe not once she hits the 12" mark, but you never really know.
Although I've never kept Festae, from what I hear you'd be ill-advised to keep them with geo's or sev's in a tank of any reasonable volume. I had a particularly docile Green Terror, however, so it is very possible to keep them with a GT in a 180. He was in a 75 with some clown loaches and cyprinids, and he never bothered a soul.
I have a 125 with geos and a sev and I'm really interested in a gt. My research leads me to believe you have a 50/50 shot because for every docile/community friendly gt I read about there is another that will liquidate your stock. Another problem is that gt seem to turn nasty when they approach 10" and most people keep them with a stock such as yours long enough for them to reach 10".
It really depends on the fish. The Festae in my avatar got beat down pretty good by a same sized female GT. Sadly, had to get rid of the GT in the end.
I'm sure at some point my Festae will show different levels of aggression, but it's interesting that at 4-5" the GT was the tougher fish. Put them together at 12" and I'm sure it would turn out differently though.
The Green Terror is a maybe, because like the folks have been saying, some are relatively peaceful, others live up to their common name. The Festaes on teh other hand, well, I've never seen one I'd trust with severums or geos.
