Just bought a 55 gallon for my GT. He's still just a baby. I know he'll get big eventually. I know I shouldn't put many in with him but can I put a few fish in there with him and if so what kind? I was thinking smaller African or Malawu cichlids..

What do you guys think?

he will most likely not accept cichlid tankmates in a 55. stick to dithers and catfish.

I agree, especially if its a male. How about a featherfin syno?

I have a 6inch male GT in a 60g with a male convict and some african mbuna cichlids....he is fine with them....but every GT has a different personality....in a 55g i would buy a male convict and maybe 6 african mbuna cichlids to go with your GT.... i use africans as dithers..so they will do great....go with only african mbuna species, no peacocks!....

This worked for me. Grow a group of cichlids out in a 55gal, then move them in to a 125gal= peaceful fish. This worked for "Me".

I grew out:
1x male JD
1x female JD
2x BP's
1x FH
1x Oscar
4x electric yellow
5x cons.

anything around his size. I got mine with a midas and a rd plus a dovii. they all grew up together.

Does this combo still work?

I wouldn't mix africans with SA/CA personally. They no speaka the CA/SA cichlid language. Plus the water parameters are completely different. Plus full grown that GT will be cramped in a 55.
