what tank mates could i have for my bichir and needlenose gar? i was thinking of adding an eartheater cichlid, serevum, or discus. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Your needlenose gar (if it's Xenetodon cancila) is a brackish species, when young, that will require increases in salinity as it matures. And, while the poly can tolerate light brackish conditions, the discus, severum, and (depending on species) the eartheater won't do well in the salinity or pH needed for the needlenose.

Bah, I've heard accounts of them breeding in freshwater. Brackish fish don't breed in freshwater, so I presume it's a freshwater species that can tolerate salt.

As for tankmates, there are really two rules for these fish:
-it can't be edible
-it has to be within an aggression range (weak fish will be killed)
Payaras would rip your poor gar to shreds. However, as for those other fish, I doubt there'd be much trouble. Then again, I have little experience with cichlids.

As long as you don't go brackish, I think the geo would be a great idea. I've got one and he doesn't bother fish that are on the top.
